Columbia’s first RO-DBT Program is Now Enrolling!

Do you have too much of a good thing?

RO DBT is a new evidence-based treatment for people with high levels of self control, also known as emotional over-control.  ‘Self-control’ is usually seen as a good thing, however too much self-control can cause difficulties.  Excessive self-control is associated with social isolation and poor interpersonal relations and it contributes to conditions like anorexia nervosa, obsessive-compulsive personality disorder, chronic depression and autistic spectrum disorders.

Over- control is seen as a problem of emotional loneliness - not necessarily lacking contact with others…...but lack of social connectedness with others.

RO-DBT can help!

We are social beings and we know that 3 core components of emotional well-being are:

  1. Openness to feedback, even when this is challenging

  2. Flexibility in our responses, to ever changing demands

  3. Communication of our emotions, recognising that expressing emotion is crucial when forming close interpersonal bonds

RO-DBT treatment strategies aim to build:

  1. Flexible responding to the demands of the moment

  2. Emphasis on the importance of authentic emotional expression to build positive interpersonal relationships

  3. Self enquiry into our usual responses

  4. Ability to manage unexpected or challenging feedback

RO-DBT increases your ability to be more receptive, open, flexible, and socially connected with 4 distinct components of treatment.

  1. Individual Therapy: Individualized one on one therapy targeting your specific treatment goals. Our highly trained therapist will focus on helping you build strategies to improve your social connectedness alleviating problems associated with loneliness. The duration of therapy is ~30 weeks.

  2. Skills Class: Weekly two hour class to teach you all the skills you will need to cope through receiving feedback, manage high levels of comparison, increase adaptability and flexibility, feel safe within your body and environment, and to identify and express emotion. All these skills combined will assist your ability to more deeply connect with yourself and others.

  3. Coaching: Treatment that transcends the therapy room. If needed, your individual therapist or skills class teachers are available in between sessions to help you through real-time situations that cause you distress. It’s available to help you quickly and effectively integrate the skills into your life.

  4. Consultation Team: All of our therapists have been extensively trained by Dr. Thomas Lynch, the developer of RO-DBT, and participate in an ongoing weekly Consultation Team to ensure quality treatment to our participants.
