Sarah Omland

Counseling Intern

My passion is for people and their unique culture and experience. I believe that everyone is an individual with specific needs, wants, and desires. I'm here to help you build the confidence in yourself to advocate for what you need out of life. I am here to help you along your journey, not judge it.

I am currently getting my Masters of Education in Counseling at Stephens College. I am at The Current as an intern to get the experience I need to become a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) and under the supervision of Kelsey Esser, MSW, LCSW. During my time at The Current, I will be training in Radically Open Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (RO-DBT), Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) and the specialization of eating disorders.

My priority is helping those that feel most alone,  misunderstood, and unaccepted, especially those that are of marginalized populations. I believe that everyone deserves to be treated with respect. I will continue to advocate for those who are marginalized and help them demand the respect and rights they deserve. My experience and  interests in particular are sexual trauma, religious trauma, family trauma, self-injurious behaviors and suicidal behaviors. I work with ages 16+.

I see myself as an existential therapist and utilize concepts of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). When people see the word “existential" they think doom, gloom, and death. My belief is that darkness only helps the light shine brighter. With the knowledge that our time will someday come to an end, we are empowered to be our best selves and make as much of an impact as possible with what time we have. Because of this, I try my best to bring brightness to those around me, you never know how much a smile or kind word is going to affect the person you’re interacting with. My goal for my clients is that they come to accept their authentic selves and allow their light to shine.

Reading books has always been my safe haven. It has helped me develop my unique ability for strong empathy and understanding for the struggles of others. Here are some of my favorite quotes that best describe my passion for advocacy and hope for the good of humanity. I hope in reading them you feel empowered or at the very least they make you think about the world a bit differently.

Seems to me –” Lee said, feeling for the words, “seems to me the place you fight cruelty is where you find it, and the place you give help is where you see it needed.”

  • Lee Scoresby, character of Philip Pullman’s His Dark Materials book series

“The bravest person I know is afraid of the dark. She sleeps with a night lamp always, but if her friends are threatened? She suddenly thinks she’s a bear twelve feet tall and attacks whoever scared her friends. There are all kinds of courage. You’ll find yours.”

  • Daja, character of Tamora Pierce’s The Circle Opens book series

“Death isn't empty like you say it is. Emptiness is life without freedom. Emptiness is living chained by fear, fear of loss, of death. I say we break those chains. Break the chains of fear and you break the chains that bind us to Society.”

  • Eo, character of Pierce Brown’s Red Rising trilogy
